Electro Physiology Study

Electro Physiology

An EPS (electrophysiology study) evaluates your hearts electrical circuit. It can also identify irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).

An EPS can help your doctor to :

  • See how well your heart’s electrical system is working
  • It tells the source and type of abnormal heart rhythm and guides for best treatment for your arrhythmia like pacemaker surgery, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), catheter ablation or bypass surgery
  • It helps identify the cause of dizzy spells or blackouts
  • Assess your risk of further heart problems
  • Decide if you need additional treatments, such as medications,
  • Normally it is a safe procedure but , there are some risks like abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias , bleeding or bruising at puncture site blood clot in lung or legs

Estimate Timing and Process :

EPS test takes between 1 and 4 hours. you’ll be awake throughout the test. Catheters are inserted into sheaths placed in the groin and neck and are , gently passed through veins until they reach your heart . An x-ray machine guides the catheters to your heart. Cardiologist uses electrical impulses to make your heart beat at different speed. You may need medication or a brief shock to control your heart beat Most people can return to their normal activities over the next few days. Your doctor will discuss the results of your test and determine the best treatment for you.

Note : Death from this procedure is rare
