Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD)

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a device similar to a pacemaker and is implanted in the same way as a pacemaker.

It transmits a large electrical shock to the heart when the heart beat becomes abnormal and fast and helps the natural pacemaker of the heart to take control of the heart again Some devices contain both a pacemaker and an ICD. ICDs are often used as a life saving tool in patients who are at a risk of developing cardiac arrest because of abnormalities in the cardiac function If the ICD senses the heart is beating at a potentially dangerous abnormal rate, it'll deliver an electrical shock to the heart.

Note : This often helps return the heart to a normal rhythm.
